judge's choices
"I selected this image because of how profound it is. The way the freshly born baby is looking directly up at the parent, reaching for them even. For the water to be so undisturbed, makes it seem like the baby has been there all along, waiting for someone to scoop them up."
Cristina King
"In Mothering the Mother, the viewer gets precious insight into the beginning moments of how multi generational care is modeled. The juxtaposition of the mother nourishing the baby and the older sibling nourishing the mother is beautiful. 'C'est la Vie', 'That's life' in sharp focus is poetic."
Heather Gallagher
"I love the warmth and depth that radiates from this image of parent and baby resting in a filled tub. The ripples of the water are so gentle, the touch from mom to baby looks so soft, it makes you feel like you're peeking in on this truly serene and intimate moment."
Cheyenne Varner
"Besides the great composition, I love the look of pure self-love in this mom's eyes. Knowing that it came after her determination to have a VBAC makes it all the more special a moment to have captured. It is also a precious image as she is sharing her joy with those in the delivery room, with us, and with her new little one."
"The moment when a birthing person is whisked away for a belly birth is not one that’s often seen. The photo is such a poignant point of view from the person meant to wait on the other side, knowingly leaving the birthing person alone. Such moments are hard and takes ones breath away and this photo portrays that beautifully."
